Atlanta fell short in their preseason finale to the lowly Jags, but with most of the starters out of this game from the start there is no reason to fret. Dominique Davis got the start at QB and showed his ability to create the big play with a 59 yard pass to Kevin Kone for his lone score of the night. Overall, Davis showed his inexperience, however, throwing 2 interceptions and settling for 175 yards through the air, despite playing the entire game. Perhaps the bigger note should be that Davis DID play the entire game while newly signed Luke McCown never got off the sidelines. I would imagine this is a fairly ominous sign for the QB who seems unlikely to crack the 53 man roster. If Matt Ryan were to go down, though, McCown will likely be the first one called in any case.
Jacquizz Rodgers was the other player I was interested in seeing and he did not disappoint in limited action. He started the game and finished with a TD of his own on 5 carries for 24 yards. It will be interesting to see how much run he will get in Atlanta’s first game, but I would imagine he will see the ball early and often.
The Falcons sat their starters, but Jacksonville gave their’s a good amount of playing time. Despite that, the Jags could only muster 7 first half points. Of course, Maurice Jones-Drew is still holding out and Blaine Gabbert is still Blaine Gabbert. They were able to slow down Justin Blackmon for just 16 yards on 2 catches. He was having an outstanding preseason before today.
The most important part of this is that preseason football is over, and the final roster will be set tomorrow. I will have a full post analyzing the depth chart with any surprises and key position battles.
